Sara was staying at the penthouse while her father and Tanner headed to Maine. Accompanying her and Lucas was Warren’s live-in housekeeper, Mrs. Johnson. Lydia Johnson was suitably impressed by the level of luxury the penthouse afforded.

“This is so lovely, Sara.”

“Thank you. We love life on the ranch but it’s always a pleasure to come back to the city.”

“Do you think we’ll have to stay here for long?”

“I hope not. Jake and I are both doing what we can to find the man who hired the killer to attack Daddy in his office. Before coming here there was a break in the case that should lead to something.”

“I’m worried about your father. I pray that he stays safe in Maine.”

“He’s with Cody. My husband is resourceful.”

Sara helped Mrs. Johnson to settle into a guest room. After placing Lucas in a playpen that sat in a corner of the kitchen, she poured water to use in making a pot of coffee.

Mrs. Johnson entered the room and shooed her away. “Let me do that.”

“Nope. You sit and relax. When you’re here you’re my guest.”

“All right, but I’m not accustomed to sitting still.”

“I hope you know how much Jenny and I appreciate everything you do for Daddy, Mrs. Johnson. If he were alone in that house and fending for himself, he might be eating frozen dinners every night.”

“I enjoy having someone to cook and care for, although your father isn’t home nights very often these days.”

“You mean he’s spending time with Nina?”

“Yes.”

“What do you think of her?”

“She seems lovely,” Mrs. Johnson said, but it was voiced in a flat tone.

Sara smiled. “You don’t like her either, do you?”

Mrs. Johnson put her cup down. “I didn’t say that. I’ve had very little interaction with the woman. I do think she’s a little young for your father.”

“Is that a polite way of saying she’s a gold digger?”

“Now, Sara, don’t put words in my mouth.”

“I don’t mean to. There’s something about Nina Girardin that doesn’t sit right with me. What do you know about her?”

“She’s been married before. That man was also older than her.”

“How much older?”

“She was thirty-eight and her husband was fifty when they married. He died only a year later of a heart attack.”

“She told you this?”

“I overheard her and Warren talking,” Mrs. Johnson said, she then shrugged slightly. “I was moving about, doing my chores, you tend to hear things. I wasn’t being a snoop.”

“I believe you.”

“It seems the husband left her money. Miss Girardin used it to open her first boutique.”

“Yes, Daddy said she was in business.”

Mrs. Johnson waved a hand. “That’s enough about your father’s lady friend. I don’t like to gossip.”

“I just wanted to learn more about Nina.”

Mrs. Johnson took her cup to the sink and cleaned it. “Call me if you need me, Sara. I’ll be in my room unpacking. Afterward, I think I’ll go out and explore the city some. It’s been years since I’ve been here.”

“Okay, Mrs. Johnson.”

Sara thought over what she had learned about Nina, including the dead husband.
